Carambolim is a man-made fresh water reservoir that was originally constructed for irrigating the surrounding paddy fields of Carambolim village. It is said that the construction of this reservoir dates back to the Kadamba period.  The lake was first declared as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area in 2005. Currently, 289 species of birds have been documented from Carambolim Lake, making it one of the top birdwatching sites in Goa.
